Where I was
You may have noticed that last week I didn’t put out a newsletter, and that’s because I was at L.A. Comic Con. I was fortunate enough to host “Reality TV Now,” where a panel of experts and I discussed our thoughts on the current state of reality TV, our favorite reality TV moments from the past, and what we would like to see from shows in the future. The panel included the hosts of The Bachelor PhD and Girls Unscripted, as well as Peter Madrigal from Vanderpump Rules.
What I’m watching
Recently, a new adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot dropped on the streaming service Max. It follows the general story of the classic book: Ben Mears returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot to work on his next book, only to discover that the townspeople are being attacked by a vampire.
Unfortunately, the movie feels a bit rushed. King’s books are notoriously difficult to adapt to films without changing a handful of moments for the medium, but this film spoon-fed us the vampire aspect without allowing us to discover it on our own. The best part of Salem’s Lot in book form is that if you didn’t know it was about vampires, you’d have to pick up on context clues until about halfway through.
This 2024 version was a fun watch for the season, but maybe not a must-watch. Put it on while cleaning and you’ll have a good time.
What I’m making
Did you know that the Friday the 13th franchise of films also had a TV series? The series was about antiques — terrifying! The main character, Micki, inherits an antique store from her uncle who made a deal with the devil to sell cursed antiques. Micki and her cousin have the duty of recovering the antiques so the items won’t cause more harm. On the latest episode of Vanderpump Robs Premium, designer Jothan Cashero joins me to talk about an episode all about the horrors of Hollywood.
